Mikawa Junior High School (Thursday 16th July)

Dear Friends,

Today to Mikawa Junior High School - the original school in the exchange.  If you know people who were on the first ever exchange, this is where they came.  We were treated to English, PE and music lessons, and Laura and Jess G made the evening news again whilst playing a traditional Japanese instrument called a Koto.

After lunch, we experienced Ikibana - traditional Japanese flower arranging.  This is offered as a club activity for students after school and for the less sporty among us probably would have been a good choice.  The arrangements were representing different times of the day and our efforts were checkedand improved by the teacher.

From the school we went to the beach, aware that the typhoon was approaching.  As a precaution, we opted for paddling!  The students attracted much interest from other Japanese beach users as Europeans are not a common sight in this part of Japan.  A quick trip to the Japanese equivalent of a Pound Shop concluded events for the day and we returned home to watch the typhoon approach.

The typhoon, due to make land fall on Friday 17th July, is NOT a cause of concern.  It is particularly slow moving and not particularly powerful.  It will bring a change in weather, to cloud and rain, with cooler winds.  This is no danger to us.
In fact, a drop in temperature below 30 degrees might be quite welcome.
